In 1500 writer Michel Eyquem, lord de Montaigne, wrote here parts of his "Journal de voyage en Italie". The ancient staircase, its vaults and decorations are evidence of this place's illustrious past, a jewel of history which accommodated Maximilian I, the Archduke Ferdinand and Prince heir Cosimo de' Medici.
