A shrine to the spirit of Italy, this was the birthplace of the Trentino section of the Lega Nazionale, the semi-clandestine irredentist organization that, while ostensibly safeguarding Italian language and culture, fought against the Austrians. After the First World War, Mussolini, then director of Avanti, engaged in fierce political debates with delegates of the Lega Nazionale, and Alcide De Gasperi, the first prime minister of the Italian Republic, who lived in the area, was a habitué all his life. Known as the Caffè Grande Simeoni as early as 1850, the Viennese Art Nouveau premises have now been beautifully restored.
