A café-institution at the heart of the life of Milan for two centuries. Originally next to the La Scala opera house, it was home to the aristocratic Club dell’Unione and the Jockey Club, and patriots from here helped launch the Five Days rebellion against Austria in 1848. A place of splendour, it was also a ballroom and the centre of evening life. In 1868 it even minted coins. A favourite of Speri, Cairoli, Mazzini, Garibaldi, Boito, Verga, Sabatino Lopez, and Bacchelli. Exclusive and sophisticated, its tradition as a salon of Milan society continues in the elegant Via Montenapoleone.
