Inn La Calcina
since 1850

Inn La Calcina
A charming example of nineteenth-century Venetian inns, for three months in 1877 it was home to John Ruskin, author of The Stones of Venice. In his Ciels de Tiepolo, writer Alain Buisine tells of how he woke up here and mentions another guest, poet Henri de Régnier. The Café La Calcina – later “Vapore” and “Cucciolo” – is also famous as the meeting place of “scapigliati” artists including Francesco Maria Piave, Verdi’s librettist. Poet Marie de Régnier, who was loved by D’Annunzio, was photographed here in 1909 with writer Jean-Louis Vaudoyer.
