The Grand Hotel of Gardone, created by a German engineer, made Lake Garda famous worldwide and is, in itself, a popular tourist attraction. Secretaries of State, ambassadors and scientists would sojourn here, waiting to be received by Gabriele D'Annunzio at the Vittoriale. In this de luxe world, Winston Churchill was inspired to paint, Nabokov and Somerset Maughan to write.
